First, they focus on power and lumen count, but skip photometric distribution. Wattage tells you energy consumption, not where the light goes. If you're lighting a path, you need a Type II distribution, not a flood. If you're accenting a facade, you need a narrow beam spotlight. Without specifying that, you leave the choice to the manufacturer's default—which may or may not align with your design.
Second, they assume color temperature is a single value. Every LED has a binning range. A nominal 3000K fixture can actually be 2850K or 3150K. For a retail or hospitality project, that difference is visible and damaging. Yet most spec sheets don't include a consistent CCT tolerance or a Delta E reference for color consistency.
Third, they rely on the manufacturer's claimed lifetime without checking the test conditions. Lumen maintenance data from an LM-80 test varies with case temperature. A 50,000-hour rating might be based on 25°C ambient, but your installation in Dubai will run much hotter. Unless you match the test conditions to your environment, the number is almost meaningless.
I'm not sure why this keeps happening. My best guess is that most spec writers come from a design or procurement background, not a photometric engineering one. It's not an excuse. It's an explanation.
The $22,000 Mistake
Let me give you a concrete example of what vague specs cost. A few years ago, we specified a group of BEGA recessed floor washers for a hotel entrance. We gave the supplier the wattage, the color temperature, and the cutout size. We didn't specify the beam angle or the exact light distribution.

- Color rendering. Specify CRI ≥90 if the application calls for it. For hospitality, this matters a lot.
- Lumen maintenance. Ask for L80 or L70 values with the test temperature and ambient range. Match it to your site's climate.
- Ingress protection. IP65 is good for wet areas, but not always enough for coastal salt spray. Check the IK rating too.
- Corrosion protection. For industrial or marine environments, ask about the specific coating system and material grade.
A good manufacturer will give you all of this. BEGA is a spotlight manufacturer that publishes photometric data, product passports, and test references for almost every fixture. But you have to ask for them and check them. The data doesn't help if it stays unread in a PDF.
When BEGA Isn't the Answer (Honestly)
Now I want to be honest about limitations, because no one benefits from a universal recommendation. BEGA isn't the right choice for every project.
If your project is a simple, cost-sensitive bulk installation where the lighting performance is secondary and the budget is tight, a premium architectural brand might be overkill. You can often get a basic IP65 batten for half the price. If your timeline is critically short and the exact BEGA item isn't in stock locally, you may need to consider alternatives with faster availability. And if you need a custom finish that BEGA doesn't offer in their standard line, that adds cost and lead time.
But for architectural outdoor lighting where consistency, durability, and long-term performance matter, BEGA is one of the most reliable manufacturers I've dealt with. Their spec documentation is thorough, and the products consistently match their published data. The catch is that you still need to do your part and write down exactly what you need.
Total cost of ownership isn't just the purchase price. It includes installation, potential rework, operational efficiency, and lifetime replacement. A cheaper fixture with vague specs can end up costing you far more than a properly specified BEGA unit if it fails or performs differently than expected. The lowest quote is rarely the lowest total cost. I've seen that played out too many times to ignore it.
So, here's my final thought. The fixture isn't usually the variable that breaks a project. The specification is. Treat every spec sheet like a legal contract.
