  • DLC (DesignLights Consortium) listing — not mandatory, but it's the key to utility rebates. A DLC-listed fixture can be dramatically cheaper after the rebate is counted.
  • ASHRAE 90.1 and local energy codes — these set caps on lighting power density. The fixture has to fit within the allowance your engineer calculated.
  • IEC 60598 — the international luminaire standard, worth knowing if your portfolio includes global projects.

Now for the counter-intuitive part: the higher-priced fixture is often the better deal.

In Q3 2024, we priced out a recessed downlight retrofit for a 40,000-square-foot office floor. Three manufacturers met the basic spec. One had a sharp unit price. One was mid-range. BEGA was the most expensive per unit.

The Bottom Line

BEGA light fixtures are a solid choice for commercial projects if you know what you're buying. You're not buying a commodity at the lowest unit price. The cheapest fixture is rarely the cheapest fixture. The hidden costs—rebates lost, inspection failures, maintenance callbacks, early replacement—are where the real money goes. And if a vendor can't provide proper compliance paperwork, that's a red flag. Walk away before you're stuck with fixtures you can't legally install.
