What My BEGA Bollard Lighting Purchase Taught Me About Choosing a Light Fixture Supplier

The day the bollard lights started blinking

In November 2022, one of the bollard lights in our parking lot started blinking. I ignored it, assuming it was a temporary glitch. Then a second one started. By the time our facilities manager pulled the housing open and found water pooling inside the lens, I had to admit something to myself: I'd chosen those fixtures.

I'd been the office administrator for a 200-person commercial real estate firm since 2020. By 2022, I managed purchasing for our facilities team—roughly $180,000 annually for furniture, maintenance supplies, and lighting. When we signed the lease on a renovated office building that year, I was responsible for sourcing every light fixture in the place.

The scope included ceiling light specifications for the main open-plan workspace, track lighting specifications for the lobby, and bollard plus wall-mounted fixtures for the outdoor parking and walkways. Six suppliers, three product categories, one spreadsheet. I thought I had it covered.

Why I picked the cheaper bollard fixture

When the quotes arrived, I compared the basics: wattage, lumens, color temperature, and unit price. One supplier stood out because it came in 32% lower than BEGA for a bollard fixture that looked identical on paper. I didn't just see that as a good deal. I saw it as proof that BEGA was overpriced.

The winter that changed my mind

For the first six months, everything worked. The fixtures looked sharp, the parking lot was well lit, the budget looked good.

Then winter arrived.

It started with a flicker. Then the finish on one housing started to peel. By February, four of the 24 bollard fixtures had visible water inside the lens. Our facilities manager started calling them 'the blinking ones.'

At about the same time, a ceiling fixture from another budget supplier lost its driver. The electrician asked me for the fixture's ambient temperature rating. I didn't know. That moment was worse than the CFO conversation that came later.

Reading the BEGA documentation I'd ignored

After the failures, I went back and read BEGA's original documentation package. It was not marketing fluff.

BEGA's photometric data was provided in IES and EULUMDAT formats, tested per IES LM-80 standards for LED lumen maintenance. The fixture carried an IP66 rating under IEC 60529, meaning it was dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. The housing was die-cast aluminum with a corrosion-resistant finish, not painted steel. The driver was rated for the ambient temperature range of our region. The warranty was five years.

Not one of those details had influenced my original decision. They all mattered the moment I was standing in a parking lot next to a failed fixture.

The question everyone asks is 'what is your price per fixture?' The question they should ask is 'what engineering evidence proves this fixture will survive real conditions?'

I also had to revisit the lobby track lighting. The budget vendor's photometric table showed a 24-degree beam angle, but the installed fixture's beam spread looked closer to 40 degrees. Another re-order, another delay.

What the rework actually cost

Replacing the failed bollards cost $2,600 in labor and materials, plus about $450 in administrative time handling warranty claims. There were softer costs too: the electrician's lost afternoon, two months of unreliable parking lot lighting, and a CFO who didn't appreciate paying twice for the same job.

I tracked all these numbers. That's the other lesson: quantify your failures, because those numbers will change the way you buy.

The replacement fixtures were BEGA. In the 18 months since, there have been zero failures, zero maintenance tickets, and zero water in any housing.

What to look for in a light fixture supplier

After this experience, I created a 12-point checklist for lighting supplier evaluations. If you're making similar decisions, steal it:

  • Photometric data: Ask for IES or EULUMDAT files. If they can't provide them, the fixture hasn't been properly tested.
  • IP rating: Verify it per IEC 60529. For outdoor fixtures, IP65 or higher is a good baseline.
  • Driver specification: It should be rated for your local ambient temperature range, not just for the LED module.
  • Lumen maintenance: Look for L80 values reported per IES LM-80 testing.
  • Housing material: Outdoor fixtures need corrosion-resistant construction, not just a decorative finish.
  • Warranty: A one-year warranty on an LED fixture is a red flag. Look for 5 years or more.
  • Replacement parts: Will drivers and lenses be available in five years? Ask directly.
  • Thermal design: Heat shortens LED life. A good fixture design manages heat explicitly.
  • Certification: UL, CE, or other recognized certifications should be documented, not implied.
  • Service access: Can the fixture be opened and serviced without removing the entire housing?

This checklist looks like overkill when you're flipping through quotes. The old me would have skimmed it and still bought the cheaper option. What changed isn't just the checklist—it's understanding that 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.

Bottom line

If you're sourcing architectural lighting, look beyond the price column. Evaluate the documentation as part of the product. A detailed, test-backed spec sheet is a feature. The absence of one is a risk.

BEGA light fixtures are now our default for both indoor and outdoor architectural lighting. Not because they're the cheapest, but because they gave us the engineering evidence needed to make a confident decision. That peace of mind is worth more than any 32% discount.

Prevention over correction. That's the whole story.

One last thing: this experience changed how I present purchasing decisions internally. Now I walk into budget meetings with engineering documentation, not just quotes. It's much easier to defend a decision when you can point to the IP rating, the L80 data, and the five-year warranty. Procurement starts to look less like a cost center and more like a risk management function.
