I think most buyers evaluate downlight manufacturers in the wrong order.
They ask about price first. Delivery second. Specifications third—if they get around to it at all. That’s backwards. I know because I’ve been handling B2B lighting orders for 12 years, and I’ve personally made and documented six significant mistakes that added up to roughly $48,000 in wasted budget. The expensive ones weren’t caused by bad-looking products. They were caused by specs I didn’t verify, and costs I didn’t ask about.
So here’s my position: The first test of a downlight manufacturer is not price. It’s transparency. If a supplier won’t show complete, verifiable data up front, the project will cost you later—in change orders, emergency freight, or field rework.
The wrong way: price first, specs later
I once ordered 120 LED downlights for a commercial fit-out. I said “3000K, standard dimming, recessed”. The factory heard “3000K, standard fixture”. We discovered the mismatch when the shipment arrived and none of the drivers would accept the control voltage we’d planned. The result: $7,800 in rework plus a two-week delay.
We were using the same words but meaning different things. Looking back, I should have attached a written spec and asked the factory to confirm each line. At the time, I assumed “standard dimming” meant the same thing to everyone. It didn’t. That’s not just a supplier problem. That’s a spec problem.
Since then, I’ve built a checklist. It’s not sophisticated. It’s based on asking the questions that the quote doesn’t answer. I’d rather get a higher-looking quote with everything defined than a lower quote that leaves the important details for later.
What I mean when I say “downlight specifications”
In architectural lighting, a useful spec sheet is not a marketing page. It’s a set of numbers that can be checked. For indoor downlights, I want to see:
- LM-79 photometric test results for the specific fixture, not a similar one. This tells you actual lumen output, wattage, CCT, CRI, and distribution.
- LM-80 or TM-21 data for the LED package. This supports the “rated life” claim.
- Driver details: brand, type, dimming protocol, and whether the driver is guaranteed or “option”.
- Physical dimensions and cutout size. I’ve seen two “6-inch” downlights that did not share a common ceiling opening.
- Warranty definition. What’s covered? Who pays for labor? Does it include finish?
As of January 2025, the common references are still IES LM-79, LM-80, and TM-21. They’re not legally required everywhere, but a manufacturer that won’t provide them is making you guess. If you can’t verify the specs, you’re not making a buying decision—you’re making a gamble.
Why BEGA makes the point for me
I started paying attention to BEGA because of bollard lighting. On outdoor landscape projects, the bollard is where a lot of “small” decisions get made: IP rating, impact protection, mounting method, dark sky compliance. A cheap, vague bollard can fail in the first winter. BEGA bollard lighting spec sheets include photometric distribution, ingress protection, impact rating, and installation details. I don’t have to call someone to explain whether the bollard is rated for the location. That’s the kind of thing that makes a BEGA light fixture quote easier to process.

In Q4 2024, we quoted three downlight manufacturers for the same set of specifications. The lowest quote came in 18% below the most expensive one. On paper, it was a good deal. Then we added what the quote hadn’t included: dimming drivers, mounting accessories, freight, and packaging for the distribution channel. After those add-ons, the “cheap” quote was 5% higher than the transparent quote—and it still had the vaguest warranty.
I won’t pretend BEGA was the lowest quote in that comparison. It wasn’t. But I’ve learned to look for the supplier whose quote says “this is what it costs, and this is what you get”. If a light fixture supplier starts with a low number and builds the budget back up with omitted details, the real cost won’t show up until the project is already committed.
How to evaluate downlight manufacturers: the checklist I actually use
After the mistake I described earlier, my team and I started using this order of questions. It doesn’t guarantee a perfect project, but it catches most problems before ordering.
- Ask for the LM-79 report for each SKU. Not one for the family. Not a sample from another model.
- Ask for LM-80/TM-21 data. If the answer is “we don’t have it”, I assume the lifetime number is marketing.
- Ask for the driver spec. Brand, protocol, compatibility, and whether the quote includes it.
- Ask “what’s not included?” before asking for a better price. This should be a normal question, not a weird one.
- Ask for IES or photometric files. A serious manufacturer can send them in minutes.
- Ask what happens if the product doesn’t match the spec sheet. That’s the real test of a warranty.
For outdoor fixtures, I add: what is the IP rating? What is the IK rating? Is there a salt-spray or UV report? On BEGA bollard lighting, those details are usually in the data sheet. That tells me the manufacturer expects the questions.
But what if transparent vendors are too expensive?
I used to think the transparent vendor was the one with the higher sticker price. Sometimes that’s true. Yet I’ve found that a transparent quote is easier to compare against other quotes, because every line has a reason. If a lower quote doesn’t list a driver, that’s not a lower price—it’s an incomplete price.
One common pushback: “the customer only asks for price.” That happens to me too. But when I buy for myself, I never buy based on a single number. I buy based on what can go wrong. The supplier that hides costs in the future is the one that makes the project look good at the start.
I also want to say this clearly: not every low quote is a trap, and not every complete spec sheet is expensive. The point isn’t to dismiss a budget option. The point is to ask the same questions before you compare numbers.
What I still don’t fully understand
Honestly, I’m not sure why rush order pricing varies so wildly between manufacturers. My best guess is it’s more art than science—capacity, risk, or maybe just different ways of estimating how much emergency schedules disrupt work. But I do know this: when I specify BEGA light fixtures or any other complete-data brand, I rarely need a rush order in the first place. The rework is where emergencies come from.
Start with transparency, not price
If you ask me, the best way to evaluate downlight manufacturers is to start with documentation. Price belongs in the conversation, but it comes after the spec sheet, the test reports, and the list of what’s included. A supplier that can’t answer those questions won’t become more transparent after you sign the order.
BEGA is one of the brands that pass my test. That’s not a paid endorsement—it’s a track record. But the principle doesn’t belong to one brand. It’s the requirement: demand verifiable specs, ask what’s not included, and make the true cost visible.
