How to Choose BEGA Downlights for Wholesale: A 7-Point Buying Checklist

If you buy BEGA light fixtures for resale—or you’re setting up a commercial lighting private label around downlights and outdoor luminaires—this checklist is for you. I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at a commercial lighting distributor. I review roughly 200 unique SKUs a year—maybe 190, I’d have to check the system—and I’ve rejected about 6% of first deliveries in 2024 due to spec mismatches. This is the same process I use before signing a wholesale purchase order.

The goal here isn’t to find the lowest unit price. It’s to avoid the expensive discovery that comes after the container arrives. Here’s the checklist I use, in order.

1. Lock down photometric specs before asking for pricing

The biggest mistake I see in wholesale buying is comparing wattage and forgetting everything else. A commercial fixture’s value is in the delivered light: correlated color temperature (CCT), delivered lumens, beam angle, and color rendering index (CRI).

For BEGA downlights, ask for the photometric report—not just the product datasheet. The report should be based on IES LM-79 test methodology, which is the standard electrical and photometric measurement method for LED luminaires. Ask: “What’s the delivered lumen output at 3000K, 90 CRI?” rather than “How many watts?” Wattage tells you energy draw; it doesn’t tell you how much useful light you’re getting.

For outdoor fixtures, beam distribution matters even more. A bollard that produces a wide, flat distribution can create glare in a parking area, while a downlight with too narrow a beam will leave dark pockets in a lobby. BEGA’s spec sheets include these distribution curves—use them.

2. Verify certification and test data for the exact model

Don’t accept “certified” on a cut sheet. Ask for the UL file number, DLC listing, or IP rating documentation that corresponds to the exact model and finish you’re ordering.

IP ratings are a common source of confusion. Per IEC 60529, an IP65 rating means the fixture is dust-tight and protected against water jets. That matters for an exposed outdoor wall light or bollard. Inside a commercial lobby, an IP20 rating is usually acceptable. If you assume one rating fits all, you’ll end up with either over-specified cost or under-specified reliability.

Also check that the certification is current. A fixture can be listed one year and de-listed later after a component change. That’s why I verify the status at the time of order, not just on the first sample.

3. Get a full cost breakdown, not just the unit price

I’ve learned to ask “What’s NOT included?” before “What’s the price?”

The list of exclusions tells you more than the quote itself. Unit price should include the fixture, but what about packaging, palletization, FOB terms, minimum order fees, and private-label setup costs? A quote that looks 8% cheaper can be 15% more expensive once it’s on your dock.

When I first started in procurement, I assumed the lowest quote was the best choice. A few expensive surprises later, I learned to compare total cost of ownership. In 2024, I compared two quotes for the same BEGA outdoor bollards from different suppliers. One had a lower unit price but added separate charges for export packaging and a “special order” fee. The other supplier listed all costs upfront. The transparent quote was higher per unit but lower delivered cost. At least, that’s been my experience on the distribution side—so now I ask every supplier to show me the delivered cost, line by line.

Put this in writing. If a vendor can’t itemize the costs, assume something is being marked up later.

4. Order a sample, measure it, and compare it to the spec sheet

Spec sheets are not the product. Before you commit to a full container, order one sample—pay for express shipping if necessary—and test it yourself.

Set it up in a dark room, measure the CCT and illuminance with a handheld meter, and note the beam distribution. Compare the results to the LM-79 report. Do the numbers line up? If the sample doesn’t match, the production batch won’t either.

Here’s a real example from 2023. We rejected a batch of 1,200 BEGA bollards because the CCT was visibly off—roughly 3200K against our approved 3000K specification. The vendor said it was within “industry standard”. We rejected the batch anyway and made them rework it at their cost. Now every contract we write includes a CCT tolerance clause of ±100K from nominal.

5. Ask about the driver and thermal management

The LED engine often outlives the driver. That’s not an opinion; it’s why driver selection is a core part of commercial fixture quality. A high-quality LED array inside a fixture with a poorly cooled driver will still fail early. This is the part a lot of wholesale buyers skip—until they get 200 field failures.

Ask the manufacturer: Who makes the driver? What is the expected driver lifetime at the operating temperature inside this fixture? Is the driver replaceable in the field, or does the whole luminaire have to be returned? If you’re selling to specifiers, they’ll ask for this before they approve the fixture—make sure you can answer without forwarding an email chain.

BEGA is generally strong on driver and thermal data, but if you’re placing a private-label version, make sure those details are in your own specification. Don’t rely on “premium components” without names and numbers.

6. Confirm packaging, labeling, and lead time for your distribution model

Wholesale isn’t just about the fixture—it’s about getting it to your customer in one piece.

Ask for packaging photos or a packaging spec. Are individual units boxed, or bulk-packed with dividers? Are outdoor BEGA light fixtures protected against moisture in transit? Is there anti-scuff protection between painted surfaces? It sounds minor, but transit damage is the fastest way to turn a good wholesale deal into a returns problem.

For private-label projects, check barcoding and labeling. Does the packaging carry your brand, or does it still show the manufacturer’s logo? Packaging mismatches create confusion at the retail counter and can even affect liability.

Also ask for a lead time based on the current quarter—not a “typical” lead time. Supply chains shift. A vendor who commits to a date in writing is a partner; a vendor who gives you a range is asking you to hold inventory.

7. Understand the warranty and claims process before you pay

Here’s the thing: a 5-year warranty is only useful if the claim process doesn’t make you wait 60 days for a replacement. For a commercial lighting distributor, the key questions are:

  • What’s the documented failure rate on this model?
  • How are claims handled—advance replacement, credit, or return-first?
  • Who pays for freight on warranty replacements?

I used to assume a long warranty meant the manufacturer had confidence in the product. Now I ask how the replacement flow works in practice. If you have to ship the failed fixture back first, pay the freight, and wait for approval, your working capital is stuck for months.

Advance replacement for approved claims is a real advantage in the B2B channel, and it’s worth paying a bit more per unit to get it. A warranty is a negotiation point, not a marketing line. Use it.

Three mistakes I still see in wholesale lighting buys

Here are the mistakes I see most often when a distributor rushes a purchase order:

  • Assuming “same spec” means same output. Different manufacturers—and sometimes different product generations—can interpret 3000K/90 CRI differently. Verify measured data.
  • Skipping the IP rating check for BEGA outdoor lighting. A covered walkway might take an IP44 fixture; an exposed facade needs IP65. If you order the wrong one, the fixture will fail after the first storm.
  • Ignoring the driver warranty. The LED engine might be rated for 50,000 hours, but a cheap driver can end its life at 10,000. Confirm the driver warranty and replacement logistics.

That’s the checklist. No surprise endings—just the checks that keep the next shipment from becoming an expensive lesson.
