BEGA Light Fixtures vs. Price-Only Sourcing: A Total-Cost Guide for Distributors

Dimension 4: What Happens After You Sell It

For a distributor, the sale isn't the end. It's the beginning of the service relationship.

  • Beam angle data: Spotlights live or die by their beam spread. Ask for IES files or photometric reports. No data, no order.
  • Color consistency: Downlights look terrible when batches don't match. Ask how the supplier controls chromaticity. BEGA's downlights generally specify CCT tolerances; any serious supplier should do the same.
  • Driver access: Commercial downlights need servicing. Is the driver replaceable from below? Are spare drivers available? Wait—that's actually two questions. Both matter.
  • Stock flexibility: A spotlight supplier with a 12-week lead time can still be a good partner for planned jobs. But if they can't give you a firm promise, reduce the risk by ordering earlier.

This is why BEGA remains common in distributor inventories. Not because it's the trendiest brand, but because it's predictable. The 20th fixture matches the 1st—I've seen enough batch-mismatch complaints to know that's worth something.

Which Sourcing Method Wins?

Let me give you a non-answer that's actually an answer: it depends on the timeline and the client.

If you're buying a single emergency replacement, unit price matters less than availability. Go with what's on the shelf.

If you're a wholesaler deciding which brands to stock, TCO should be the default filter. BEGA may not win every line item, but it wins the reliability and support categories. Those determine whether you get repeat orders or service callbacks.

If you're a lighting designer specifying for a building with a 20-year life, the cheapest quote almost never survives contact with the contractor. Give the contractor a spec that's verifiable and serviceable. That's the definition of “spec-grade” in my book.

This worked for us, but our context is distributors and contractors who expect to own a fixture for years. If you're buying for a temporary installation—event lighting for a six-week run, for example—the cheapest fixture might be the logical choice. Different job, different math.

The cheapest fixture is rarely the cheapest. The fixture you can get on time, verify, and service is the cheapest.

A Quick TCO Checklist

Before you sign the next lighting PO, run through this:

  1. Base price per fixture.
  2. Freight, handling, taxes, and minimums.
  3. Lead time and confidence level.
  4. Photometric files and IP ratings in a format you can use.
  5. Spare parts and driver replacement plan.
  6. Warranty process and who answers the phone.
  7. Reputation cost if the fixture fails before the warranty expires.

I still use this list. It would've saved us a lot of headaches in 2022—or rather, it did, after one expensive lesson changed our policy.
